Why do I need an MOT Test?

What happens if my Vehicle Fails it’s MOT?
If your vehicle’s test result lists ‘dangerous’ or ‘major’ problems you will fail the MOT. You may not be allowed to drive until you have the problems repaired.
You might also get a list of ‘minor’ or ‘advisory’ problems to monitor and fix in the future.
If your vehicle fails the MOT:
- You’ll get a ‘refusal of an MOT test certificate’ from the test centre
- It will be recorded in the MOT database
There is an appeal process if you think the result is wrong.
We would strongly advise that if your vehicle fails for a dangerous fault that you have it repaired before driving it on the road.
You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle that has failed its MOT because of a ‘dangerous’ problem.
There maybe a fee to pay for a retest if you take the vehicle away for repair.
